Journaling June-July

Currently sitting in an airport, about to fly 12hrs to Amsterdam and then hop to England for a work trip. I’ll be there for the next week or so, and I hope it goes well. Mostly, it’s a team introduction, so low pressure.

The last week has been busy. I rushed a lease signature, got to actually start moving in, and realized the A/C didn’t work, and most of the appliances weren’t fully hooked up. I’ve since then gotten the washer/dryer plugged in and situated, the oven properly placed, and transitioned all my belongings from the temp lease room to this new place. I also went through and cleaned the heck out of the old place, I should get my full deposit back after.

Moving to Austin is already turning out to be one of the best moves of my post-graduation life. It seems like every major life change I decide on, brings me further along a beautiful progression track. Going to college, leaving Louisiana, working at a startup. Each time an incremental leap.

I moved back in May, with a temp 2 month lease. It gave me time to tour town, and settle down plans with my friends on rooming. At one point, I was going to room with my buddy R, who already lives here. Then A got RTO’d by IBM, so we were looking at some larger homes for a comfy experience. R was lukewarm, and I eventually asked and they dropped out. So with a 2 weeks to spare, I toured a number of in-range homes and then settled on one that was actually pretty nice. Like with all rent homes, it’s going to have problems, but at least they will be mostly superficial.

At work, I’m getting onboarded to be part of the broader Digital Solutions team, which will give me more leeway to effect solutions for the company, more access to more infra. It’s good,, and I was feeling somewhat stifled. At this point I’m loving the job, it’s very low-key and has a lot of room for making my own projects. Very IC type role.

The chaos of moving twice in 2 months plus doing most of the house hunting solo has been taxing. I’m glad to have ppl I can fall back to though. After this week, I’ll get back and still need to do a final walkthrough with the temp lease landlord. I’ll also need to get internet setup at the new place, and finalize changes to the property with the landlord at the newer place. For now though, I’m going to try and enjoy my first UK trip ever. I won’t hit london, likely, but I will have time to see some buildings of note in Birmingham, hopefully.
